The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in the western Mediterranean Sea, to the east of the Iberian Peninsula. The four largest islands are Majorca (Mallorca), Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza (Eivissa/Ibiza) and Formentera. There are many minor islands and islets close to the larger islands, such as Cabrera, Dragonera, S'Espalmador, etc.
From an administrative point of view, the archipelago is an autonomous community of Spain.
The islands compose the emerged part of the so-called Balearic Promontory, which constitutes the north-eastern prolongation of the external zones of the Betic Cordillera (East Spain) into the Mediterranean Sea. This orogenic promontory consists of Palaeozoic to Middle Miocene materials deformed in a thrust and fold system during the Late Oligocene–Middle Miocene. Seismic reflection profiles show that the Alpine thrust front is located NW of the Balearic Promontory constituting the southern margin of the so-called Valencia Through. The promontory constitutes a main continental shelf segmented in two zones, Ibiza-Formentera to the south and Majorca-Menorca to the north. To the south, the promontory shelf terminates in the so-called Emile Baudot Scarp. This is a NE-SW linear scarp of ca. 380 km length that develops from 200 to 800 m in its shallowest part, to more than 2000 m depth at its base. This scarp has a tectonic origin, corresponding to an old fault scarp that suffered extensive erosion during the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis.

While it's possible a Mg-rich, Al-rich, or Fe-rich celadonite group mineral could be present (and these would likely have similar XRD patterns to chromceladonite), the locality is a cave hosted in an upper Miocene reef limestone, and so there is no compelling justification for any Cr mineralization. No other Cr minerals are reported.
Other minerals included in this paper (and the mineral list) are also likely erroneously reported (e.g. jacobsite, wyllieite, qingheiite), but chromceladonite certainly stands out. |
