The Ngaanyatjarraku Shire is 1,542 kilometres north-east of Perth, covers 159,948 square kilometres, and the population of the shire is 1,838 in (2012). The shire contains several small indigenous communities in the Gibson Desert. Its eastern boundary is the South Australian and Northern Territory borders. The countryside is sand-dunes covered in spinifex, the occasional low hill or range, tending to mountain ranges near the border of the three states.
The nearest settlement is Warburton which is 560 kilometres by gravel road from Laverton. The settlements further east in the shire are more remote still. 66% of the population speak the ngaanyatjarra language, and a significant portion the pitjantjatjarra language. 19% of people speak english.
A permit is required from the shire to travel the Great Central Road, which is a 2,800 kilometre gravel road from Laverton to Winton in Queensland. There is usually no problem obtaining these, but access to the rest of the shire requires a special permit. Please see the shire's website. Please also be aware about photographs, which for cultural reasons may not be welcomed.
The main attraction is the large art gallery at Warburton (on the Great Central Road) displaying works by local artists. Tours of the Giles Weather Station can be arranged.
The shire sits in the Musgrave (geological) Province, which also extends into northern South Australia. The local indigenous council has allowed exploration of the area only in recent years. A number of metal deposits were found, the most significant being the Wingellina Ni deposit and Nebo-Babel. There are no active major mines in the region, and this situation may possibly continue considering how far the region is from ports and other facilities. Chrysoprase is the only material known to collectors from the region. As access is not permitted, there is a reliance on the local communities to supply the market, but little has been seen.
