Stewart Island is composed entirely of rocks from the Median Batholith, being a continuation of the geology found in Fiordland. It contains one of the largest areas of granite in New Zealand.
The northern third of the island is the Anglem Complex consisting of a selection of older plutonic rocks of diorites, minor gabbro and granite, and many pegmatites. Dykes, pegmatoid veins and pegmatites are simple affairs on Stewart Island consisting of alkali feldpsars with hornblende, microcline, rare beryl and tourmaline. The pegmatite swarms have been little studied as most of the island contains no roads, and is covered in thick scrub and forest making all bar a few close to Oban inaccessible.
The middle section is the Freshwater Valley Fault, trending across the island from north-west to south-east from near Codfish Island to the southern margins of Paterson Inlet. It consists of alluvium, and volcanic sediments, weakly metamorphosed, with older granite intrusions of the Median Batholith. Sub-economic polymetallic deposits are found at North Red Head, Hill 267, and Silvertown.
The bottom two thirds of the island are many separate younger granite bodies. This is mainly leucocratic biotite granite, granite, and granodiorite. Plutons are common. Granite domes have been exposed by glaciation. The Port Pegasus tin field includes cassiterite, wolframite and gold, and historic mining has proven it to be sub-economic.
