One of the most important mineral localities of the world, the Buckwheat Dump, as it is popularly known, is one of only two mineral sites in the Franklin Mining District that are regularly open for mineral collecting. The other location is at the nearby Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg. The Buckwheat Dump Mineral Collecting Site is located adjacent to the Franklin Mineral Museum on Evans Street. It is open to the public when buying an admission ticket that specifically includes entry to the collecting site. This locality is also open to Museum members. The site is fenced, but the locality is open during normal business hours from Spring until Autumn. Visit the Museum's website (www.franklinmineralmuseum.com) for specific hours of operation or when the museum is not scheduled to be open. The Museum also has occasional nighttime digs for fluorescent mineral collectors and many other scheduled events. The museum and mineral collecting site are also open for school or group tours.
Note: The Buckwheat Dump contains minerals from a variety of mineral localities from Mineral Hill, the location of the "Franklin" mines. For that reason, virtually any mineral listed under "Franklin Mine" may be encountered on the Buckwheat Dump. At any particular time, there may be minerals from this area under investigation as minerals new to science.
Caution: At various times, the Franklin Mineral Museum has had mineral dumps for children: one for "local" minerals and one for "worldwide" minerals. Not infrequently, "worldwide" specimens have been left in the Buckwheat Dump proper and as a result, these exotic minerals are occasionally reported to Mindat, although they are usually easy for local collectors to recognize and edit.
