The deposit is located on the right side of River Utkemsu, about 12 km NW of the village of Istiklol (formerly Taboshar), on the southeastern slopes of the Kuraminsk Range.

Known since antiquity. The gossan zone of this deposit, enriched in native silver, was intensively mined in the 7th-9th centuries AD. From these workings, which reached a depth of 150-180 m, ca. 2,000 tons of silver were extracted. In 1925, when the deposit was rediscovered, the waste piles of the ancient mines still contained abundant silver minerals. Exploration was started in the 1960s; until the 1970s both oxidized and primary sulphide ores were periodically mined. The total silver production is estimated at about 300,000 kg.

Kanjol deposit is part of the homonymous ore field. This area is composed of Middle Carboniferous granodiorites, crossed by dykes of different hypoabyssal igneous rocks of Late Paleozoic age, at the contact with coeval granites and younger diabase porphyry. The ore field, due to intensive tectonic processes, is characterized by the presence of a group of first-order faults, named Iron [Железный], Turquoise [Бирюзовый], Kandjolskiy or Kandzholskiy [Канджольский], Rare Metal [Редкометальный] and Bounding [Ограничивающий], and a second-order feather fracture system. Kandjolskiy fault splits the territory of the deposit into two sectors - western and eastern. The main Ag-bearing mineralization is connected with the second-order fractures, which are preferentially N-NE oriented.

Ag mineralization is confined to quartz, quartz-carbonate and rarely baryte veins. Ore minerals are represented by acanthite, freibergite, polybasite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galenobismuthite, etc. Minerals of the oxidation zone include: chlorargyrite, native silver, argentojarosite, cerussite, smithsonite, scorodite, cuprite, covellite, azurite, malachite, wulfenite, manganese oxides, etc. The silver content in ores ranges between 20 and 6,495 g/t, sometimes reaching 60 kg/t. The ores of this deposit also contain 5% Pb, Zn 2,5%, Cu 0,02-0,62%, Bi 0.03%, Cd 0.04%.
