Catamarca is a province of Argentina, located in the northwest of the country. The province covers an area of 102,602 km².

Neighbouring provinces are (clockwise, from the north): Salta, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Córdoba, and La Rioja. To the west, it borders the country of Chile.

The capital is San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, usually shortened to Catamarca. Other important cities include Andalgalá, Tinogasta, and Belén.

The province is divided into sixteen departments (Spanish: departamentos).

Ameghinite (TL)

Type Locality:
Description: Crystals of ameghinite are characteristically elongated on <010> and flattened on {001}…On the largest crystals, about 5 millimeters long, the {001} faces are frequently curved as though bent around the a axis. The smaller crystals, one millimeter or less in length, lack the pronounced curvature but even they show some bending and give a series of signals from the {001} faces. The small crystals of ameghinite occur either partially or completely surrounded by tincalconite. Ameghinite is also found in nodular masses embedded in massive borax. Most of them are about a centimeter in diameter, but can be up to 5 centimeters long. The manner of occurrence of ameghinite is identical with that of ezcurrite and rivadavite with which it is closely associated. In fact a single study specimen 25x15x12 centimeters contains nodules of all these minerals However unlike the other two minerals that are found in contact with the surrounding borax, the nodules of ameghinite are in every case separated from the borax by tincalconite.

Type Locality:
Description: Aristarainite occurs chiefly in well-formed isolated crystals elongated on <010> or tabular parallel to {100}. The elongate crystals average 0.3 mm in length and 0.05 x 0.05 mm in cross section. The dimensions of the largest tabular crystals are 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.1 mm. Rosette-like aggregates of tabular crystals that reach a maximum dimension of 1 mm are also found. In short-wave U.V. it shows cream-white fluorescence and slight phosphorescence. Aristarainite is found in small crystals in a matrix of borax and kernite. In addition it is associated with small amounts of rivadavite, ezcurrite…ameghenite and macallisterite The mineral is fairly stable but should be kept in a well sealed container for long term storage
