History
This mine has been by far the largest operator in the entire Bancroft district, and was worked from 1919 till 1928, when work was suspended. It was opened up originally by the Pennsylvania Feldspar Company, which was taken over in 1920 by the Verona Mining Company, which in turn was taken over by the Genesee Feldspar Company of Rochester, in 1922. The last-named company has performed most of the work. The output, consisting of about 5,000 tons per year, has all been shipped to the Genesee Company's own mill at Rochester, N.Y.
The mine lies on the northeast slope of a hill and consists of a single main opening, started originally as an open-cut and worked by benching. A drift was later carried in on the dyke below the upper workings and the deposit worked by a series of irregular stopes with pillars left between them. The latest work consisted of sinking near the mouth of the drift, but this operation encountered a large mass of calcite within the dyke mass, and caused the closing down of the mine.
The deposit is remarkable for the presence in it of a variety of rare-element minerals, some of them recorded here for the first time. Its content of such minerals makes this deposit one of the most remarkable pegmatites, mineralogically, yet discovered in Canada.
The main pit has a length of 600 feet (ca. 183 m), an average width of 50 feet (ca. 15 m), and a depth of 85 feet (ca. 26 m), the dip being about 80 degrees NW. A small surface pit was also worked in 1927-28 on an outcrop of the same dyke a few hundred feet west of the main pit. A small production was made, but the results were not such as to encourage further development.
Mining operations have now been transferred to an adjacent property (concession VIII, lot 14). The mine lies 2 miles (3.22 km) from Hybla station, on the Canadian National railway, to which point the spar was conveyed by truck or wagon. (Spence 1932)
