A former underground Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu-Au-Mo-Mn mine group located in the center SW¼SE¼ sec. 30, T.20S., R.14E, 0.5 miles N of Cottonwood Canyon, 6.5 miles SE of Mt. Wrightson, on National Forest land. There were 55 claims in the group in 1957.
Discovered in 1907 by Dan J., Edward T., Jerry, and Pat J. Sheehy, and A. O'Donnell. First produced 1911. Owned at times, or in part, by Sheehy; Santa Cruz Silver-Lead Co. (1917); Sunrise Mining Co. (1951-1959); Arivaca Mining Corp. (1965-1967); E.A. Meek (1954); Sheehy Brothers (1911-1916); E.J. Sikes (1949); Festiago(1928); and, Harper (1942). Operated by the Colorado Fuel & Iron Steel Corp. (1972).
Mineralization is sulfides and quartz deposited in permeable zones at the intersection of a bedding plane fault and favorable beds in Permian Naco Group limestone. Extensive solution of the limestone and deep oxidation concentrated secondary minerals in the leached caverns as sand carbonate ore. Alteration includes oxidation, silicification, sericitization, kaolinization and recrystallization of limestone. The host rock unit is the Horguilla Limestone. An associated rock unit is the Salero Formation.
Local structures include abundant bedding plane faults; major faults strike N60-75W, and dip 60NE; and, N60E, dip 60S, and the Glove Fault. Quartz monzonite is correlated with the Squaw Gulch Granite.
Workings include shaft and adit operations. There are 5 shafts & an adit; 2 old 75 foot deep shafts, 1 shaft at 360 feet deep , 500 & 600 Foot tunnels, and a 66 foot winze. Worked at various times from about 1911 through 1972. The group produced some 29,260 tons of ore averaging about 22% Pb, 9% Zn, 7 oz. Ag/T, 0.3% Cu, and minor Au.
