Named in 1845 by Karl Wilhelm von Haidinger in honor of Karl Friedrich Plattner (January 2, 1800, Kleinwaltersdorf, Saxony, Germany – January 22, 1858, Freiburg, Saxony, Germany), Professor of Metallurgy and Assaying at the Bergakademie of Freiberg, Saxony, Germany.
Dimorph of:
Rutile Group.

One of the formation routes might be a decomposition of a Cu-Fe-Pb oxysulphide precursor (Kucha, 1998).
