The 20 × 20 km Baogutu Cu-Au district in West Junggar (NW China), consists of a large-size porphyry Cu deposit and more than ten gold deposits/prospects mainly in the western periphery. The Baogutu porphyry Cu deposit contains 200 Mt ore with an average grade of 0.28 % Cu and 0.14 g/t Au. Two general groups of gold mineralization are recognized in the Baogutu district:
(1) Au–As–Sb-bearing quartz veins and stockworks hosted by volcano-sedimentary rocks and dioritic dikes in the periphery of diorite to granodiorite stocks (e.g., Baogutu gold deposit consisting of prospects I, II, III and IV); and
(2) small Au–As–Bi-bearing quartz–sulfide veins in the contact aureoles of the stocks (prospect XI).
The total economic gold resource in the Baogutu district is more than 30 t, of which the Baogutu gold deposit accounts for more than 20 t at an average grade of 5.5 g/t Au.
Country rocks in this area are represented by a sequence of Early Carboniferous volcanic-sedimentary rocks which are intruded by a small stock (Baogutu stock, outcrop area: 0.84 km2) and later diorite porphyry and granite porphyry dykes. The Baogutu stock mainly consists of quartz diorite surrounding a core of granodiorite porphyry which hosts a porphyry-style copper-molybdenum deposit. Associated high-temperature magmatic-hydrothermal vein-type copper-gold mineralizations occur in the contact zone of the intrusion. In addition, the country rocks around the dykes outside of the contact zone of the Baogutu stock host mesothermal vein-type gold ore bodies.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Paleozoic : 436.7 ± 7.4 Ma to 299.6 ± 2.9 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
