The Southland Region comprises the Southland District, Gore District and Invercargill City.
As the name suggests the Southland Region covers the southern end of the South Island, and includes the major town of Invercargill, various small inland towns, the Fiordland National Park, and Stewart Island.
Various islands also make up the Southland Region including Stewart Island/Rakiura, Ruapuke Island, Bird Island, Green Island, Breaksea Islands, Lee Island, Seal Rocks, Hazelburgh Group, Half Passage Rock, Fife Rock, Centre Island, Solander Island and Little Solander Island.
Gold locations include the Nokomai Valley in the far northern section of the region; the remote Preservation Inlet area in the Fiordland National Park; the Waikaia Valley; and Round Hill area west of Invercargill. The only locations retaining substantial mining relics are several mines at Preservation Inlet, but these are difficult to access. The only active gold mine (2018), is a dredging operation around Waikaia.
Historic and modern coal mining has occurred south of Gore, and at Nightcaps and Ohai. Some minor mining continues (2018) at these locations.
Port Pegasus on Stewart Island saw tin mining historically for a brief period, and much evidence remains, however the location is difficult to get to.
Outside of local collections, specimens for the region are scarce. A number of fossicking locations were found along the south coast, and near Oban on Stewart Island. They are generally easy to access, and include Bluff, Greenhills, Oban, Riverton, and Cosy Nook. Species include feldspar, schorl, beryl, quartz crystals, zeolites, amongst others. None are earth shattering quality, but often interesting. Many of the beaches along the south coast containing black magnetite sand with gold, and red garnet sand, depending on weather conditions. Gemstone Beach west of Invercargill is well known for semi precious pebbles.

2) as a chromian variety as trace quantities in two specimens of amphibole-rich rock from a distinctive lithostratigraphic unit generally about 20 m thick, it is inferred that the unit is probably a metatuff of unusual composition. The composition of the chrome rich variety corresponds to (Mg1.04,Fe2+2.509Zn0.217)(Al17.308,Cr0.445)(Si7.664O44(OH,O)2 + minor amounts of V, Mn, Cu and Ti
