Named in honor of Vladimir Stepanovich Sobolev (Владимир Степанович Соболев) (17 May [30 May] 1908, Lugansk, Russian Empire - 1 September 1982, Moscow, USSR), Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Director of the A. E. Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Moscow (1980 to 1982). He was a petrologist, studied the mineralogy of silicates, magmatism and metamorphism of rocks, and the mineralogy and petrology of the Siberian Platform.
