Campo Seco, which means "dry camp" in Spanish, is an unincorporated community in Calaveras County, California. It was founded by Mexicans in 1849. The town was almost destroyed by a fire in 1854, but as the placers were still producing, much of the town was rebuilt. Afterward the lack of water resulted in depopulation as miners returned to the river bars. Chinese and Mexicans replaced them and a large Chinatown section developed. A second fire almost wiped the town out again, but it was rebuilt for the second time.
