Name:
Named by H. Tanaka et al. in 2010 in honor of Hitoshi Momoi (桃井斉)(20 January 1930, Tokyo, Japan - 26 February 2002), mineralogist and Professor at Ehime University, Japan. He was an expert on manganese and first recognised the presence of a Mn3V2Si3O12 component in garnet.
Type Locality:
A garnet with this formula had previously been described as "yamatoite" (qv), a species which was later discredited because the type material was not truly Mn-V-dominant, although the name "yamatoite" continued to be used for the hypothetical Mn-V-garnet molecule.
Note that the alleged photos of momoiite may in fact be showing goldmanite and it is not possible to visually distinguish these species without individual analysis.
