Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit in Lower to Middle Devonian submarine bimodal volcanic rocks. The primary ores are represented by massive syn-depositional pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, and were formed by submarine exhalation. Hydrothermal alteration consists of strong sericitization, chloritization, silicification, and carbonatization of the metavolcanic rocks beneath the massive orebodies.
The Ashele Cu-Zn deposit is the largest and most typical VMS-type deposit in the Chinese Altai Mountains, with about 1.08 Mt Cu, 0.43 Mt Zn, and 27.2 t Au resources. Average ore grade of 2.46 % Cu, 2.93 % Zn, 0.41 % Pb, 18.37 g/t Ag, and 0.36 g/t Au. The Ashele Formation (Early-Middle Devonian) and the Qiye Formation (Late Devonian) are widely exposed in the ore district. In addition, a variety of intrusive rocks are developed, including diorite, diorite porphyrite, and a few gabbro veins. There are about fifteen mineralized alteration zones in the ore district and the Ashele deposit is located in the largest No. 1 mineralization zone, which comprises 4 blind orebodies (No. 1 to No. 4). Among them, the No. 1 orebody is the major orebody and contributes more than 98 % of the identified Cu resource and 97.5 % of the Zn resource.
