Strata are represented by the Qimantagh Group and the Triassic Elashan Formation. The Qimantagh Grop comprises plagioclase-rich amphibolite, mica quartz schist, metabasic quartz sandstone, marble, and metamorphic siliceous rock, which mainly occur as xenoliths in Silurian tonalite. The Triassic rocks predominantly consist of andesite, basaltic andesite, basaltic andesite tuff, and volcanic breccia. Cenozoic sediments locally cover both the Ordovician and the Triassic rocks. The intrusive rocks exposed broadly all over the mining area and the rock type consists of tonalite intruded in Silurian. A suite of fault-hosted mafic to felsic dikes intrudes the tonalite and sedimentary rocks.
Pb-polymetallic mineralization mainly occurs in quartz sulfide veins. Three distinct ore belts have been identified, designated as I, II, and III. II ore belt is the most economically valuable of these ore belts. The orebodies within this belt usually manifest as SN-trending, lenticular quartz-sulfide veins, which are structurally influenced by the SN- striking fault. The veins dip steeply (20–60°) towards the east (80–100°) and are up to 600 m in length and 0.9–16.2 m in thickness. The Pb ore grade in the orebodies ranges from 0.97 to 22.5 wt%, and certain ore bodies are associated with Zn, Ag, Au, and Cu. Minor amounts of Cu mineralization without economic importance were discovered in the western part of the mining area.
Four hydrothermal stages can be recognized, on the basis of field evidence and microscopic texture. From oldest to youngest they are: Pyrite-quartz stage (Stage 1): It is represented by milky massive quartz, accompanied by a small amount of fine-grained euhedral pyrite and arsenopyrite. Quartz-polymetallic sulfide stage (Stage 2): It is characterized by polymetallic sulfide assemblages, which includes quartz, sericite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, with lesser amount of galena. Quartz-galena stage (Stage 3): It is the main metallogenic phase and is characterized by large amounts of galena. Quartz-calcite stage (Stage 4): It is characterized by veins of calcite and quartz, with minor sulfides, marking the end of mineralization.
