Alaid, located on Atlasov Island, is the northernmost, the highest and one of most active volcanoes of the Kuril Island. It is mainly consists of alkali basalts, and minor basaltic-andesite.

Yellow volborthite and turquoise-coloured atacamite have been found incrusting cracks and the surface of lava blocks. Volborthite is likely a supergene mineral formed as a result of alteration of primary fumarole minerals. The specimens studied by Zhitova et al. (2020) were collected between Cape Plecho and Cape Nochnoy, in the northwestern costal zone of the island. According to analytical data of Rashidov & Anikin (2020 a), the same minerals are also present in the other coastal zones of the island.
