Iron mine with minor zinc, copper and silver. Earliest mentioned as silver mine 1481. The iron ore is of skarn iron type and hosted in metavolcanics rocks and sediments.
The iron ore low in phosphorus and rich in lime and manganese was the base for the high quality steel from the famous Walloon works. Comprises around 50 open-cast mines of which the largest, Storrymningen, is 200 m long and 100 m deep. Closed 1992. Reopened in June 2012 by the company Dannemora Mineral.
