An important locality mined for phlogopite, located about 30 km south of Isoanala and 12 km from Beraketa.
It is the oldest underground mine in Madagascar, and was the most important phlogopite mine in Madagascar.
It was started in 1938 by the company Union des Micas, founded by André Seyrig (1897-1945, see seyrigite).
Today, the mine is closed (2016). It is owned by the company Société Minière d'Ampandrandava (SOMIDA). An underground mine is still to be seen, which was reported partially accessible in 2013.
Typical are pegmatitic crustal silico carbonatites pockets in diopsidites (Morteani et al. 2013). At Ampandrandava these are characterized by coarse-grained lilac anhydrite, orange calcite, large books of phlogopite, large diopside crystals.
Note: Labradorite samples from Madagascar have been erroneously assigned to this locality (http://www.mindat.org/mesg-7-35944.html).

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Cambrian : 533 ± 24 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
