Located 1 mile North of Sykesville. An iron and copper mine (copper after 100 feet deep). Opened in the mid-1800s (about 1857) and closed before 1892. Owned by George Patterson. This mine was the chief source of ore for the Elba Furnace (on the Patapsco River, ¾ mile SE of Sykesville). The workings featured a main shaft over 300 feet (100 meters) deep. It was originally worked for iron ore, but substantial copper mineralization was encountered at depth. The deposit is interpreted as a metamorphosed exhalative sea floor deposit.
The mine site is now a nature preserve with groomed trails.
