Lavergruvan, Älvsbyns kommun, Norrbottens län, Sverige

In 1929 two ore prospectors working for the Boliden Company discovered a copper bearing boulder some 10 km SE of Laver. Further prospecting led to the discovery of a smaller deposit- in all 1,5 Mton of ore with approximately 1,5 % Cu. Due to the need of greater amounts of Cu-concentrate to the company smelter in Rönnskär a decision was made to open the deposit, even though the ore was considered poor.

A complete new village was built with housing, school and shop. Everything were of new design and top modern for the time; electricity, central heating, running hot and cold water in each house, water closets and a public laundry house with modern machines.

The mine was in production from 1936 to 2 Nov 1946. The same day a planned dismantling started to take place so the whole settlement was moved to other mining places in the Skellefteå district. Even today it is possible to see remnants of the house structures and the streets.

The ore is located in a metavolcanic rocks; 1,86-1,89 million years old.

Four different ore types occur;
a) ore breccias (by far the most common)
b) ore veins
c) faults
d) impregnations with sphalerite

Located 40 km west of the village of Älvsbyn, seat of Älvsbyn Municipality.
