| Abstract/Notes | The Cattlegrid opencut deposit, Mount Gunson Mine, on the western margin of Pernatty Lagoon, 140km northwest of Port Augusta was the focus for a field excursion by members of the Mineralogical Society of South Australia in June 1981. This mine, operated by Mount Gunson Mines Ltd, a subsidiary of CSR Ltd has been one of the survivors of depressed copper prices which in recent years has forced the closure of other Australian mines including the Kanmantoo and B urra operations. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the mineral species at the Mt Gunson copper deposits, a complex orebody where investigation at a professional level is still endeavouring to understand the nature of the bedded sulphide ores. Hopefully this work will serve as a practical reference of value to collectors, curators and mineralogists interested in Mount Gunson, and will stimulate further study of this unusual deposit.
