Shergottite Prototype
SNC (Shergotty-Nakhla-Chassigny) achondrite S-basalt (pyroxene-plagioclase).
Fall, 25 Aug 1865; 5 kg
Shergotty was for a while the only basaltic Martian meteorite and soon became the prototype for an increasing number of Martian finds. It and other Martian meteorites have provided ample evidence for the presence of water on the planet. It has also experienced severe shock, presumably during the impact that launched it into space and eventually into an earth crossing-orbit.
As new shergottites have been recovered (118 out of 145 Martian meteorites, including 2 additional falls, by early 2015), it has become common to distinguish 'shergottites' as basaltic or lherzolitic shergottites and/or use additional terms to characterize them more specifically.
