The bauxite deposit in the Kolijan area is present in five discrete outcrops as stratiform layers and lenses in karstic sinkholes and depressions of the middle Permian dolomitic limestones of the Ruteh Formation. They have a length of 1.4 km and a variable thickness from 8 to 18 m with an overall trend of NE–SW and NW–SE. According to field observations, ores of these five layers and lenses have various colors, ranging from red, brownish red, brick red, through gray, to green, greenish cream, and white. The white, gray, green, and greenish cream ores are clay-rich bauxites and bauxitic clays, and mainly occur in the upper parts of layers and lenses. Whereas, red, brownish red, and brick-red ores are Al-bearing iron ores and mainly occur in the lower parts of layers and lenses. The Al-bearing iron ores are massive with high specific gravity and hardness. The supergene oxidation on the surface, the presence of macropisoids, ooids, pisoids, and nodular forms, and traces of manganese dendrites are the significant mesoscopic characteristics of the Al-bearing iron ores.
