In the Dhaulagiri region of central Nepal, the Himalayan metamorphic slab comprises granulite-to-greenschist facies rocks of the Greater Himalayan series and Lesser Himalayan metamorphic series thrust over unmetamorphosed to low-grade rocks of the Lesser Himalayan sedimentary series along the Main Central thrust (MCT) fault.
The Kali Gandaki Gorge is in Kali Gandaki River, between the villages of Lete and Dana, northwards of Tatopani, in the western boundary of the Annapurna Conservation Area. This stretch of the river runs through the highest grade metamorphic sequence of crystalline basement, which acted as MCT slip plane.
Kali Gandaki Gorge is considered the deepest gorge on Earth, with eight-thousanders at a short distance on both sides (Annapurna and Dhawalagiri).
NOTE: Many nepalese kyanite specimens labeled as "Kali Gandaki" are actually from Daha and most of kyanite labeled just "Jajarkot" or "Jajarkot District" are also from Daha.
