About KaliophiliteHide

Formula:
KAlSiO4
Colour:
Colorless
Lustre:
Silky
Hardness:
5½ - 6
Specific Gravity:
2.493 - 2.649
Crystal System:
Trigonal
Name:
Named for the Greek for potassium, kalium, and for friendship/friend, philia/philios.
Dimorph of:
The kaliophilite framework is a variant of the tridymite topology, with alternating SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra forming sheets of six-membered rings (63 nets), which are connected along [001] by sharing the apical oxygen atoms (Mugnaioli et al., 2020).
The occurrence of some Na for K substitution (3–10%) may be related to the characteristic structural features of kaliophilite (Mugnaioli et al., 2020).
