Volcanic rocks of the northern Hessian Depression are found over an area of c. 5200 km², but only occupy c. 2.5% of this area. The volcanic rocks are distributed over c. 2000 separate outcrops, although only 250 of these areas are over 0.02 km², the total coverage being 125 km² (Wedepohl 1985).
