Although being only 1 ¼ miles SE from the Ethiudna Main Shaft; the Ethiudna East Cobalt prospect was never part of the original Ethiudna group, although some collectors place it under the same listing. It began its life in 1953, unlike 'The Ethiudna Mines' which were stated in 1883. Although Ethiudna East was only a prospect, and was never mined, it has been listed as a mine by SARIG/PIRSA. There are no shafts or other workings.
The prospect is discussed in detail in Campana and King (1958) and in Grguric (1992). It was discovered by J.E. Johnson in 1953 while working as a technical assistant on Campana and King's field mapping programme. Jim Johnson was famous for his eagle eye and excellent prospecting skills. As part of the regional study, the Geological Survey drilled two diamond drill holes EEC-1 and EEC-2. These intersected disseminated Cu-Co mineralisation, identical to that observed in outcrop, hosted in calc-silicate rocks. The grades were low, and the prospect deemed sub-economic. These two drill holes are still preserved in the core library of the SA Geological Survey.
