Numerous iron ore orebodies, hosted in metamorphic carbonate rocks and in the contact aureole of the Botro ai Marmi granite, located along the northern flank of Monte Spinosa.
Prospecting and small-scale mining operations of these orebodies were performed since antiquity, but more extensively in the first half of the 20th century (Pullè, 1918). The brown iron ore (limonite) of these small orebodies has two different origins: oxidised bodies of pyrite-pyrrhotite-arsenopyrite, related to the contact aureole of the Botro ai Marmi granite, and oxidised bodies of hedenbergite-ilvaite skarns containing pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and galena (southern fringes of the large skarn masses of the Temperino-Lanzi mining area).
The Montorsi iron ore prospects, situated north-east of Monte Spinosa summit, consist of numerous trenches, tunnels, mined caves, and a 344-m-long incline (whose entrance is located at 230 m a.s.l. in the little valley sloping down towards the road San Vincenzo-Campiglia Marittima). In all these prospects, aurichalcite is an accessory of the oxidised skarn bodies (Nannoni et al., 2012; Dini & Pistolesi, 2013).
The mentioned 344-m-long incline (known among the local collectors as "galleria del Tognetti", i.e. Tognetti's gallery) cuts (at 86 m) a karst cavity (rich in organ-pipe calcite concretions) and (at 200 m) a fault filled with iron hydroxides, in which spectacular druses of aurichalcite, as tufts of turquoise acicular crystals up to 1 cm in length, in association with colourless crystals of hemimorphite and calcite have been recovered in the 1970s. Other outstanding finds of aurichalcite are known from other excavations situated near the ridge between Monte Spinosa and Casa Montorsi (e.g. Buca Grande di Montorsi, the most well-known mined cave of this area, see http://www.mindat.org/loc-268539.html).
Furthermore, a blackish body of altered manganesiferous hedenbergite, locally containing quartz and sphalerite, crops out near the summit of Monte Spinosa.
