Campiglia Marittima is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Livorno in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 90 kilometres (56 mi) southwest of Florence and about 60 kilometres (37 mi) southeast of Livorno.
Its toponym has been attested for the first time in 1004 as Campiglia and derives from the Latin campus ("field"). In 1862 the word marittima (from Latin Maritima) was added to underline its belonging to the Maremma, the area washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The municipal territory of Campiglia Marittima covers the southern part of Campigliese (Monti di Campiglia), an area that has been affected by the Pliocenic magmatism, during the late distensive tectonics of the Apennine orogenesis (Barberi et al., 1967; Tanelli, 1993) [for a geological, mineralogical, and historical overview of this area, see http://www.mindat.org/loc-24068.html].
The first magmatic event recorded in the territory of Campiglia Marittima is represented by the Botro ai Marmi monzogranite intrusion, which originated a large contact aureole (marbles) and local metasomatic masses (diopside-scapolite-garnet-vesuvianite-allanite-(Ce) exoskarn and diopside endoskarn). The Sn-W-As ore deposits located at Monte Valerio, Santa Caterina valley and Campo alle Buche were formed during such magmatic activity.
Later on, a deep mafic intrusion provided the hydrothermal fluids that interacted with carbonatic rocks and originated the skarn orebodies, the main of which are located in the Lanzi and Temperino valleys.
The gangue of these skarn deposits consists of calcium silicates (hedenbergite, johannsenite, ilvaite) and quartz; the ore consists of iron, copper, lead and zinc sulphides (Capitani & Mellini, 2000a). The hedenbergite gangue (Capitani & Mellini, 2000b) is associated with copper minerals (mostly chalcopyrite); the johannsenite gangue with lead and zinc minerals (galena and sphalerite). At the regional scale, copper ore progressively grades to lead and zinc ore moving from the east (Temperino Valley) to the West (Lanzi Valley), namely towards lower deposition temperature. At the hand-specimen scale, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite may occur together, forming a banded texture where higher temperature episodes (chalcopyrite) alternate with lower temperature episodes (sphalerite and galena). Close to the contact, sphalerite often contains bleb-like inclusions of chalcopyrite (Bernardini et al., 1974).
