Named in honor of Yuri Sergeevich Borodaev (Юрий Сергеевич Бородаев) (1923 - 2017), Russian mineralogist specializing in the mineralogy of ore deposits and professor at the Moscow State University. He discovered 7 new minerals.
Borodaevite is questionable as a pavonite homologue; it may correspond to a homeotypic derivative of treasurite (Ilinca & Makovicky, 1997; Moëlo et al., 2008).
