Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Kurar Quarry; Kurad Quarry; Kandivalia Quarry; Kandivli-Damupada
Name(s) in local language(s):
(Khandivali)

Once a series of quarries near the town of Kandivali. Now shut permanently due to urbanization.

The quarries which produced a very distinctive suite of specimens are 3 km east of Malad (a town in northern Bombay and the closest railway station that travellers to and from the quarries use), Ward 38, Bombay, India.

The Malad quarry has also been denoted as the Kurar quarry, Kurad quarry, or Khandivali quarry.

Deccan traps.

If you were a runner involved in selling "zeolite" specimens from the quarry, you got off at the Malad train station and walked or caught a motorcycle rickshaw to the quarries, which are about 3 km east of the railway station (you can see them on satellite images here on Mindat. If you drove in a car, you went a bit further north to the little town of Kandivli (Khandivili) and then went southeast a bit to reach the quarries. There are seven quarries near Malad. The #2 quarry is the one that produced all or almost all the yugawaralite specimens. The quarries are numbered sequentially from #1. The numbering of the quarries is now not very useful because, over the course of time, they more or less merged into one another. (Rock Currier, 2009).

The term Kandivli or Kandivali refers to a quarry administered by the suburb of Damupada; hence the locality is often called Kandivli-Damupada. The most noteworthy specimens occurring here are the pseudomorphs of prehnite after laumontite. The quarry is also a source of yellowish prismatic calcite crystals, prehnite with apophyllite, laumontite, and gyrolite, more rarely babingtonite and ilvaite. (From The Mineralogical Record Volume 34 Issue 1 "Indian Zeolites").
