NBMG Sample Sites 1462; 1463; 1464 Probably Encompasses Area of Tempiute Silver Mine
Structure: Bedding Plane Faults
Alteration: Silicification
Deposit: Massive to sacchroidal quartz veins following bedding plane faults. Breccia zone/quartz filling up to 4 ft wide, silicified with silicification decreasing away from vein/fault. Much of vein/breccia zone is excavated, many workings filled with ground water. Argentiferous sulfides occur disseminated through breccia quartz vein. Ore minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, hemimorphite, cerussite, malachite, azurite, with Fe-mn-sb oxides. Fault zone continues northward but no workings noted along it. Post-mineralization silica and dendritic pyrolusite coat all rocks. Fault zone outcrops prominently along drill road leading toward sample site 1463. Quartz veins exposed in road between the sample sites are up to 2 ft wide with adjacent breccia zone up to 7 ft wide. Quartz vein weathers to spider web texture. Outcropping below limestone unit is conglomeratic sandstone with clasts slightly angular to rounded, slightly calcareous. Dips of bedding faults steepen northward and cut across bedding planes (probably prominent nw-trending fault shown on geol maps). At sample site 1463, a vertical shaft follows a 70-e-dipping, north striking fault with curved fau discovery year: 1860's
Development: Worked in 1880, deserted thereafter with no known activity until recent exploration work; area extensively drilled, surface scrapings, remains of old tempiute townsite. Exploration probably occurred 1981 or so.
