Basement rocks is prehnite-pumpyellite facies metagreywacke, and the eastern side of the Ben Ohau Range pumpyellite-actinolite facies, here cut by gold bearing quartz veins.
Many of the veins in the northern Ben Ohau Range are on steep cliff faces and inaccessible. The study looked at one which could be visited one kilometre south of Freds Creek, and 500 metres west of a major crush zone.
The veins are of prismatic and anhedral quartz, some developing in open cavities, with 5-60% (depending on where on the vein) calcite and ankerite. Parallel arrays are arranged east to south-east, 5 to 30 cms thick, and several metres long. The ankerite commonly weathers to limonite giving the rocks a brown coating.
Sulphides in the veins are disseminated, with dominant pyrite cubes to 2mms across and up to 5mms across in neighbouring wall rock. This is accompanied in the veins with chalcopyrite and galena, within and adjacent to the cubes. Gold is found in microscopic amounts within the pyrite cubes, or intergrown with chalcopyrite.
