A town located in the very northeast corner of Connecticut, it was incorporated in 1785. Geologically, the town is underlain mostly by metamorphic rocks of the Putnam-Nashoba Island Arc Terrane (Canterbury, Tatnic Hill and Quinebaug Formation gneisses), with a sliver of Avalonian Micro-continental Terrane along the east edge of town, which are separated by the Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg Fault.
