The Lady Evelyn Mine was operational from the late 1890's to 1924, and again briefly in the mid 1930's. The remains of the mine are three kilometres east of Ora Banda, bordering the Broad Arrow-Ora Banda Road on its south side. It is near the Enterprise Mine haulage cross-road. The most prominent feature remaining is the dam. A little to the west is a north-west to south-east line of shafts and minor mullock. Little remains of the battery sands at the southern end, largely removed and overgrown. Shafts of other old mines continue on trend north of the road towards the modern Enterprise mine. The mine was at the far south-east end of what was known as the Cashman's Line, a series of gold mines striking to the north-west for several kilometres and east of Ora Banda.
The mine was originally developed by the Coolgardie Company, an English concern. After considerable development work, and a shaft sunk on the southern portion of the lease, they abandoned the property, considering it either worthless or too far from a battery. 2 x 12 acres. Frank Smalpage was mine manager.
Fred Judd took over from 1902. Previously he had been a well known boxer at Coolgardie. Crushings start from 1904. Judd was in partnership with two mining mates. It is said Judd was difficult to work with, and his mining mates sold their two thirds of the mine to former boxers
Jack Goggin and Pat O'Toole for 175 pounds around 1906.
Goggin had been a well known boxer on the east coast during the 1890's, as well as a mine manager at Wyalong NSW. Goggin was said to be a genial man despite his prior profession. However Goggins and Judd came to blows over who should take control of the mine, a fight Goggin won.
In 1927, Jack Goggins is living at Old South Head Road Rose Bay Sydney. April 1927 he was driving a motor bike sidecar, with 18 year old Jack Surridge from Chaleyer St Rose Bay. He swerved to miss a bus, lost control, hitting the bus, killing Surridge instantly. Goggin was severely injured.
By 1910, over 10 000 pounds worth of gold had been won from the lease.
GML 1289W & 1308W. The mine is close to the contact between greenstone and granite to the east. The reef strikes north-west to south-east, and dips 26 degrees west south-west. It has well defined smooth walls, with gold values for a length of 1700 feet, on a reef 1 to 3 feet thick. The main shaft by 1910 was down 245 feet with levels at 160 and 210 feet. The upper level had been driven 210 feet north and 1140 feet south.
In 1911, Judd was taken to court by eight employees for non payment of wages. An arrangement was made for him to pay them after 6 weeks.
In 1914, it is noted a Kalgoorlie syndicate controls the mine, consisting of J. Conley (who appears again at the location 20 years later), Long, Delantey, Tait, Stevenson, Davey, Peck, Murphy and Caskey. Later Joe Waters, one time engineer at the Victorious mine at Ora Banda is also noted as part of the syndicate. Mining comes to a halt in 1924.
In 1934, the Lady Evelyn Gold Mines NL was floated in Sydney with 30 000 pounds capital, to acquire a working option over the mine, with the intent to purchase it after 12 months. Over half the shares were being awarded to the vendor and promoter, and shareholders should question any new enterprise where they do not have enough shares to control the company. The owners of the mine also got 5000 pounds cash.
The intention was to recondition the workings and erect a battery. This was achieved after much delay. With only one crushing from development work, and numerous further calls for money to the shareholders, the company folded after 12 months.
The mine was owned at this stage by J. Conley, who had been part of the Kalgoorlie syndicate who owned the lease 20 years before. Several crushings were put through by Conley between 1934 to 1937. P.A. 2046W.
