Dark Horse was developed as a small open pit in 1988, which has since been filled in. It produced 197 417 tonnes of ore at 2.3 g/t yielding 14 457 ounces of gold.
It is 500 metres north-east of the Bent Tree mine, and about 3 kilometres south of the Ora Banda-Broad Arrow Road. It is the northern most site on the Black Flag Goldfield.
The site really sprang to life with a rich find in 1917. It is stated the site just to the north of this find was an alluvial patch in an unspecified earlier time. Brothers C. and W. Whelan later found the reef under the alluvium by loaming. L. Martin is in charge of operations. Specimen stone was brought in to be displayed at Kalgoorlie. The shaft was down to 35 feet. They obtained 1000 pounds worth of gold within a few months, before selling the lease to a Kalgoorlie syndicate.
The name Dark Horse was also used as a locality name for prospecting leases in this northern area, through the 1920's and 1930's. A long list of prospector surnames and minor crushings was found. The problem is there was little confirmation these came from the Dark Horse lease itself. For example the Renown mine, 1 kilometre to the south-east was often just called Dark Horse in the press. As such this information could not be confirmed.
