Close to the Santa Pau village, the Rocanegra volcano is a volcanic cone with a horseshoe-shaped crater that is of great scientific and educational interest. It is believed that it could be the most recent of the Garrotxa Volcanic Region, since ashes from the Croscat volcano have been found just below the pyroclasts that form the Rocanegra volcano. The presence of ultrabasic xenoliths derived from the mantle or remains of the magmatic differentiation of the basalts in the lower crust of the Rocanegra volcanoes should be noted.
The Rocanegra volcano has an old quarry, which can be visited, where you can see the very black pyroclasts (lapilli and blocks) that formed its volcanic cone. In the surroundings of this volcano we can find pyroxenite and amphibolite enclaves from the mantle.
