Grandview Mine; Castle Rock Group
The Pope-Shenon Mine was one of the larger producers of the small group of copper mines near Salmon. The deposit was a mineralized shear zone in quartzite and argillite.
It was likely first found in the early 1890s, and the first recorded production was in 1908 when some sorted ore was shipped to Anaconda, MT. A few small shipments of ore were made until 1919 when a 50 ton mill was built. The mill did not operate well though and had to be redesigned in 1922. It was reopened successfully and ran until 1924, then closed and reopened again in late 1925. Some development and production occurred intermittently until 1928 when it became a more steady producer until closing in 1931. Bits of activity occurred after this time, with many operators making small shipments. In 1958 some tailings were reprocessed and there may have been additional development in the 1970s. The final reported production of the mine from 1908 and 1975 was 57,000 tons of ore containing 4,500,000 lbs (ca 2,250 t) of copper.
