Miniera di Nibbio (Miniera del Turrio), Mergozzo, Val d'Ossola, Provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piemonte, Italia
Old Fe-Cu mine (with very minor Ni) located at Turrio (or Motto del Turrio), between the villages of Nibbio and Bettola.
It consists of just one short (exploration) adit with mainly pyrrhotite. The main ore mineral is pyrrhotite. The ore is hosted in "volcano-sedimentary" mineralizations later re-arranged under regional metamorphism (close to the transition from amphibolite to granulite facies). The host rocks belongs to the kinzingite series of the "Ivrea-Verbano Complex".
Calcite and magnetite are not related to the mine, they were found in the rock lying on the slopes around the mine.
Provided coordinates are approximate of some tens to hundreds of meters due to the difficulty in re-locating the site from satellite imagery. The mine is at the base of a huge cliff in correspondance with a vertical brown band of Fe hydroxides
Note: the name Nibbio mine has been improperly used by Scaini (1971) in his description of alunogen and other sulphates from the old mining works, located between the villages of Nibbio and Cuzzago, for which different names are or have been used (Cuzzago mine, Freva mine, Buèr mine, or Cuzzago and Nibbio mine) [see: http://www.mindat.org/loc-147145.html].
