Amalie gruve, Strømsheia (Straumsheia), Valle, Agder, Norge
The Amalia mine was a small copper mine far away in the mountainous area of the border between the Aust-Agder and Telemark counties.
The copper ore was found in plagioclase dominated pegmatite dikes. Neumann (1954) thinks that there were 3-5 dykes in which was mined.
Over a length of 200 m several quarries and shafts (both in an angle and vertical) can be found.
The copper ore is found as parallel orientated sheets of chalcocite in the pegmatites.
An analyses of four ore samples gave as result a copper content varying from 8,89% till 24,43%. The hand sorted ore contained on average 6,5% copper.
Until 1844 ca. 169 tons ore were mined, containing ca. 30 tons of copper. This is without taking into consideration what was mined in the 17th century.
It is assumed that the total production of the mines at the Straumsheia hardly can have been more than 100 tons of copper.
