On the side of the hill which rises to the south of Buryas Bridge lies an an ancient mine which was worked under a variety of names. In 1788 the North Lode which strikes E-W across the bend in the river was named Wheal Mary. At a later date the sett as a whole became generally known as Garth (or Gath) Mine. In 1827 after a period of idleness operations resumed under the name East Wheal Cock. Working continued intermittently until 1843, in the mines final year it was known as Wheal Darby.
The site of the mine was finally obliterated in 1925 and it would have disappeared into obscurity were it not for the occurrence of significant quantities of Wood Tin, specimens of which have made it into many collections of Cornish minerals.
Note: The details given in the first edition of Dines (1956) mistakenly refer to Tregavara Downs, and the production figures are those of East Wheal Cock in St Enoder. This is corrected in the 1994 reprint.
Note: The western half of the mine, the workings of which encroach under the village of Drift, lies in Sancreed CP and the eastern half, toward Buryas Bridge lies in Paul CP according to the current parish boundaries.
