UY8-MQ7Baryte BaSO4 , Cinnabar HgS
Königsberg mining district, Lauterecken-Wolfstein, Kusel, Rhineland-Palatinate, GermanyDimensions: 10 cm x 10 cm x 5 cm
A very fine specimen consisting of massive and crystalline baryte, one can see the red tinged cinnabar which is better viewed on the back of the specimen
KLK-4H1Gold Au
Upper Adit Occurrence, Round Top, Coker Creek Mining District, Monroe County, Tennessee, USADimensions: 4 mm x 3 mm x 1.5 mm
Field of View: 1 cm
A remarkably rich specimen with 2 wires of gold arching toward each other with partially developed faces and smaller sheets scattered throughout the pocket that is most likely carbonates after disintegrated limonite. Very rare to find any gold in quartz in Tennessee!
view of the small dump and adit
Upper Adit Occurrence, Round Top, Coker Creek Mining District, Monroe County, Tennessee, USAA small dump is attached to the approx 25 foot long adit, originally it was longer but the extremely shallow adit has collapsed with time
this is the upper of the 2 shafts, approx 45 feet between the entrances
KV8-2KPStrashimirite Cu8(AsO4)4(OH)4·5H2O
Schmiedestollen dump, Wittichen, Schenkenzell, Rottweil, Freiburg Region, Baden-Württemberg, GermanyDimensions: 2.5 cm x 3 cm x 1 cm
This specimen was acquired from a friend in Germany. The strashmirite is present in the center of the photos as tiny spheres surrounded by swirling lines of copper oxidation. The label states lavendulan is present but I have my doubts as I do not see anything resembling it on the specimen.
VH6-E9GBeryl (Var: Emerald) Be3Al2(Si6O18)
Ellis Mine, Alexander County, North Carolina, USALargest Crystal Size: 1 cm
A lovely little emerald with a nice green color and natural etching common for emeralds from this mine, aquired from Jeff Schlottman over in North Carolina
UWL-VREQuartz SiO2 , Calcite CaCO3 , Baryte BaSO4
Hale Quarry, Graysville, Catoosa County, Georgia, USADimensions: 4 inches x 4 inches x 2 inches
Barite perched on top of lovely quartz crystals, Calcite not visible in the photograph
4JK-7GRStilbite Subgroup M6-7[Al8-9Si27-28O72]·nH2O
Hale Quarry, Graysville, Catoosa County, Georgia, USADimensions: 3 inches x 3 inches x 2.25 inches
Field of View: .5 inches
After consulting with another professional mineralogist, we determined this new species to be Stilbite which points to a hydrothermal structure. I only found a small pocket with some small zoned fluorites. There is no barite in or around the pocket itself. The quartz found in the same pocket has grown on top of the calcite proving that it was not one upwelling of heated fluid but multiple, at least 2 phases of paragenesis.
E6H-K6JAurichalcite (Zn,Cu)5(CO3)2(OH)6 , Baryte BaSO4
Thompson Mine, Sweetwater Barite Mining District-Western Belt, Loudon County, Tennessee, USADimensions: 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 2 cm
Field of View: .8 cm
Largest Crystal Size: 3 mm
Identified via crystal structure, Malachite is much deeper green and doesn't form needle like sheaths!
Q71-29PGold Au
Franklin-Creighton Mine, Ball Ground, Ball Ground Mining District, Cherokee County, Georgia, USADimensions: 2.5 inches x 1.5 inches x .75 inches
This a historical piece from the Prof. E Wm. Heinrich Collection from the University of Michigan. I acquired it recently from Michael Basal in Michigan who in turn acquired it from AES museum in Houghton when they deaccesioned it. It comes with Prof. Heinrich label and it is numbered 13.1. The side and top of the specimen is layered with liberal sheets of gold. The entire side is almost covered in sheets of gold which are layered in between the layers of Schist. A fine and very rare specimen!
