The Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines district is easily identifiable by 3 different sectors.

Historically the SMAM valley was separated in length, the north side was regency under Lorraine Dukes and the opposite side belonged to the Austrian Habsburg house and governed by the Rappoltstein Family (Ribeaupierre).
Lorrain side including rich and renowned mines and Sanct Jacob of Lorraine was probably the richest one of all districts.

The Alsatian side was divided into 3 distinct sectors during several centuries:

- Altenberg mountain was the oldest worked sector, probably since the 10th century.
- Neuenberg was started in 1549.
- Bluttenberg isn't well developed on the next mountain (Brézouard).

At the time when the deep veins got poorer, a terrible outbreak had befallen the souls of the region. Both the plague and the 30-year war (1633-1663) began to hurt mining operations and the mines all closed.

It was not until the early eighteenth century that the workings were restarted, but none was as successful as they had been in the past. The new operators did not take the time to learn about the ancient works and engaged work there or elders had already extracted the ore. There were many bankruptcies.

The new age of mining began in the 1960s with the exploration of networks. About 40km of galleries were rediscovered: 26km in Neuenberg, only 8 on the Lorraine side and 6 in Altenberg. Many networks were not reopened or unblocked.

Many old specimens have been labeled Markirch.

Ste Marie-aux-Mines is also currently the site of one of the largest and best attended mineral shows in Europe. Each year probably more specimens are brought there for sale than were ever produced by the mines for which the town is famous. It is difficult to know just how many specimens were saved from the mines rather than run through the mills and further speculation is needed to guess at how many of the specimens that are brought each year to this mineral show will have been saved two or three hundred years in the future.

As this locality lies in the Sainte Marie-aux-Mines district, the place is protected by an archaeological mining district status and all collecting is prohibited.

Description: 3 types of native arsenic crystallization were determined: 1. concretionary arsenic. 2. bacillary arsenic. 3. Arsenic single crystals. The arsenolamprite signaled (by BREITHAUPT) was not found yet, it is probably doubtful. Native arsenic was abundant at Sanct Jacob vein and Gabe Gottes mine was the first mine worked only for metal arsenic up to 1940. In other veins of Neuenberg mountain arsenic is not as abundant.

Description: Hematite is widespread through the massif. Many veins, sometimes more than 50 meters long run vertical towards the top. Hematite specimens can sometimes be found under unrooted trees. The particularity is that each vein has his own crystal form. Locally they are known as " la platte, la carrée, la mammelonnée " etc ... So in one vein, you only find one form. There's no mixture of forms in the veins.

Description: The macnearite samples come from crosscut "Tiefstollen" in a part of gallery which has served for the Gabe-Gottes and Saint-Jacques mines arsenic ore storage. The minerals associated with macnearite are picropharmacolite, pharmacolite, guérinite and haidingerite. The formation of this mineral is certainly due to the arsenic acid reaction with the carbonate gangue mineral. The presence of sodium must be linked to the abundance of mirabilite that lines the walls of this gallery (WEIL, 1937).
