A former Au-Ag-Pb-Cu mine located 3.1 km (1.9 miles) W of Fish Springs (town), on the S slope of Fish Springs Hill (3.2 miles N of Red Mountain), on Bureau of Land Management wilderness land (Crater Mountain Wilderness Study Area). Property consisted of 10 claims and had 3 millsites. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in andesite and granite. The ore body strikes E-W and dips 80S, at a thickness of 2.44 meters. 2 parallel veins, averaging 4 feet in thickness, are separated by an andesitic dike 15 feet thick. Local rocks include Quaternary volcanic flow rocks, unit 6 (Sierra Nevada).
Workings include underground openings. There are 3 adits. The upper is 300 feet long; the intermediate is 536 feet long; and, the lower one is 450 feet long. At 440 feet from the portal of the lower adit a 210 foot deep winze was sunk, and a drift to the W for 385 feet on the 110 level of the winze. At 256 feet from the winze, a crosscut was driven to the hanging wall of the vein, with a short drift E and a small stope above this drift. On the 155 foot level, a drift was driven 70 feet to the W. On the 210 foot level, a 270 foot drift was driven W on the N or footwall side of the vein. Ore in the vein was from 60 to 120 feet W of the winze. A drift was driven for 30 feet on the S or hanging wall of the vein into 8 inches (20 cm) of ore. A 100 foot drift was driven W on this vein. At 30 feet from the crosscut, an inclined winze was sunk 50 feet. 15 feet further W, a vertical winze connects with the inclined winze at the bottom.
Production data are found in: Tucker, W. Burling & Reid J. Sampson (1938); Tucker, W. Burling (1926); and Goodwin, Joseph Grant (1957).
A small amount of ore was produced in 1911 and ran 1.257 ounces Au; 7.12 ounces Ag; and, 62.8% Pb. Intermittent production occurred between 1911 and 1941 and had assays of 0.675 ounces Au; 11.2 ounces Ag, and 0.4% Pb, plus Cu.
Analytical data results: Ore on the hanging wall of the vein assayed $8 to $13/ton in Au (period values).
