A former underground Pb-Ag-Zn-Cu-Au (Ba) mine located on 5 claims (the 2 principal ones being the Black Hills No. 1 and the Black Hills No. 2), in east-central (NW¼SE¼) sec. 1, T.21S., R.14E., 3½ miles north of Salero and about 1 mile NE of the Jersey Girl prospect, on the south fork of Bond Canyon, at an elevation of 5,550 feet, on National Forest land. Relocated in 1905 by J.M. Orosco who sold it to Frank Reichert; and the Arizona-Pittsburg Mining & Smelting Co. (1908-to about 1915).
Mineralization is a narrow, lensing, quartz-barite fissure vein (American Boy lode) containing spotty sulfides and sulfosalts, oxidized near the surface with iron and manganese oxides, copper carbonates and silver enrichment.
The country rock is diorite, and the deposits are contained in a 9 foot wide quartz vein which dips 87ºN. This vein extends a mile or more to the east and is thought to be the vein on which the Augusta or Hosey and American Boy mines are located, respectively about 1 and 2 miles to the east, on the oppoosite side of the divide in the Wrightson district.
The quartz in general is stained with iron and manganese and little azurite and malachite. Deeper the ore contains sulphides and sulphosalts.
Workings include a 185 foot deep shaft and 25 feet of drifts to the west on the 125 level. Worked from the 1890's through the early 1900's. produced some 100 tons of ore averaging about 30% Pb, 9 oz. Ag/T, 2% Cu, and minor Au.
