San Jose de Wadley
The San Jose Antimony Mine (aka San Jose de Wadley) lies 10 km south of Real de Catorce on the west flank of the Sierra de Catorce at Estacion Wadley (Wadley Station). Although Wadley is in the Catorce Municipality, it should not be confused with Real de Catorce itself, which is a very old silver-lead-zinc district that has produced relatively few good specimens.
None of the "stibiconite", roméite etc. pseudomorphs after stibnite come from Real de Catorce itself, they all come from Wadley or elsewhere.
For many years the extensive workings of the San Jose Mine provided much of the world's antimony ore… Chinese mines have supplanted it recently. The Wadley plant was designed to treat only oxidized ores, so roméite group species were selectively sought and mined… and fresh stibnite was avoided. The stibnite formed as replacement bodies and open space fillings in 5 specific limestone beds, which were variably affected by oxidizing meteoric waters. Miners followed each of the beds separately, seeking oxidized ore pods. Open pockets lined with oxidized stibnite crystals to a meter in length were routinely encountered and hacked out by hand. Many of the pseudomorphs were very crude, others faithfully retain the details of the primary stibnite.
Some roméite specimens also come from the Santa Emilia mine and other small oxidized antimony occurrences throughout the region, whose production was brought to Wadley for beneficiation.
