Latitude & Longitude (decimal):

Goongarrie is 150 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie. The Roaring Gimlet name came from the sound of the wind through the Gimlet trees, said to have been coined by early American prospector Hiram Bilton. Ninety Mile was its distance from Coolgardie. Both were early names, but the town gazetted in 1895 was called Goongarrie, a local indigenous name of unknown meaning.

Gold was discovered here in 1893 by Billy Frost, Jack Bennett, Pickersgill and Cahill, shortly after the Coolgardie Find. A substantial settlement followed the gold rush of several hotels and businesses, however by 1906 the population had dwindled to sixty people.

Today all that remains is three restored and signposted railway fetter's cottages. The area was later taken over as a pastoral station, the homestead area available for camping. The whole area is now part of the Goongarrie National Park.

Numerous small pre 1920's gold workings border either side of the Goldfields Highway, and there are four shallow open pits developed by Julia Mines Ltd in the late 1980's. Gold is found where late stage faults intersect the major Bardoc Shear system.
