Mt. Loisau is situated about 8 km East of Pein Pyit, the summit being almost exactly located on the border between Mandalay Region and Shan State. The area comprises the headwaters of Nampai river, a trough-like valley South of the summit in the very East of Mogok Township. The area has become renowned for gem jeremejevites and, more recently, for an enormous diversity of tourmalines rivalled only by Pyingyi Taung (Letpanhla). Minerals are mined from pegmatite occurrences (e.g. Pantahole Mine) or from streambed alluvials. Mining is small scale and illicit, carried out by local villagers.
In 2005, a faceted 4.53 carats yellowish jeremejevite was sold at Htar-Pwe, the main gem market in Mogok. - Ted Themelis (2008) Gems and Mines of Mogok. - The locality information in Themelis (2008) refers to Pantahole Mine.
NOTE: The security situation in this remote area is still quite shaky (status 2015) and the area can be visited only with armed guards.
