The Begoña mine, like others in the district, was worked underground for several decades in the early 20th century for lead, zinc and minor silver content. Unlike the other district mines though, there was a surprise in the early 1990s: small gold nuggets were found accidentally by a local campesino in a gully cutting through the mine property (presumably derived from quartz veins in Ordovician sediments one or two kilometres higher up the mountain). When next the mine owner visited his lead workings he was shocked to find about 200 people digging holes and building rudimentary sluice boxes - a mini gold rush.
